DIGITAL EARTH RESOURCES FOR PRIMARY, SECONDARY, AND TERTIARY GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION

DORDEVIC, Mladen, Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology, Washington, DC 20005, COBA, Filis, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529 and THE GEODE, Team, Harrisonburg, VA 22807, mladen.dordevic@gmail.com

The GEODE (Google Earth for Onsite and Distance Education) project is aimed principally at introductory undergraduate geoscience education. However, many of our resources are transferrable to primary and secondary school implementation. For example, our Google Earth tours of the terrestrial planets and our 'Reasons for the Seasons' module are applicable to elementary school astronomy / planetary science curricula. In Earth Science class, teachers can create EarthQuiz.net collections suitable to primary or secondary student ages. Pangea breakup on Google Earth is appropriate for all levels, and although the Ocean Drilling Program data is farily advanced, school students may benefit from the experience of lifting drill core out of the subsurface as an aid to understanding how scientist konw what they know. Finally, our Google Pluto virtual globe is bound to be a hit with younger students.
