Conflict, innovation and the mediating role of family influence in the South African wine industry

Abstract
ENGLISH SUMMARY : Family businesses have unique attributes that distinguish them from their non-family counterparts. This also applies to conflict and innovation – two key aspects regarding the long-term sustainability of these businesses. This study investigated the impact of family influence in terms of conflict and innovation, by scrutinising the potential moderating effect of family influence on the relationship between conflict and innovation in the South African wine industry. A research framework comprising multi-item measures of innovation, family influence and conflict was designed to investigate the potential moderating effect of family influence. This framework was applied in a quantitative study among members of the top management teams of family businesses in the South African wine industry. A questionnaire was developed by adopting existing scales, based on scholarly literature and input from a panel of experts. Subsequently, a large-scale survey served as the primary data source and yielded data that could be used to model the relationships under investigation. Moderator analyses and partial least square structural equation modelling were utilised to determine the moderating role of family influence. The correlations between the dimensions of family influence and conflict, as well as innovation were also evaluated. The study’s meaningful findings indicate that family commitment is a significant moderator of the relationship between task conflict and innovation. Additional key findings suggest that relationship conflict and harmony as a non-economic family goal are both moderators of the relationship between task conflict and innovation. Practical implications of these findings regarding managing conflict in family businesses were discussed in terms of promoting a family business environment conducive to innovation. Relationship conflict was presented as a dimension of family influence. The study makes a contribution to stewardship theory by providing new perspectives on the roles of family commitment, family harmony as non-economic goal and relationship conflict on decision comprehensiveness, participative governance and long-term orientation. Futhermore, the study provides a new perspective on the preservation of socio-emotional wealth by relating socio-emotional wealth priorities (family members identifying with the business, preserving binding social ties among family members, emotional attachment of family members and dynastic succession) to conflict and innovation.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING : Familiesakeondernemings beskik oor unieke eienskappe wat hulle onderskei van hul eweknieë met geen gesinsverbande. Dit geld ook vir konflik en innovasie, wat twee sleutelaspekte rakende die langtermyn volhoubaarheid van hierdie sakeondernemings is. Dié studie se doel was om die impak van familie se invloed haarfyn te bepaal – in terme van konflik en innovasie – deur die potensiële modererende invloed daarvan op die verhouding tussen konflik en innovasie in die Suid-Afrikaanse wynbedryf te ondersoek. ’n Navorsingsraamwerk, bestaande uit veelvoudige maatreëls van innovasie, familie-invloed en konflik, is ontwerp om die potensiële modererende effek van familie-invloed te ondersoek. Hierdie raamwerk is in 'n kwantitatiewe studie onder lede van die topbestuurspanne van familie-ondernemings in die Suid-Afrikaanse wynbedryf aangewend. 'n Vraelys is ontwikkel deur bestaande skale, gebaseer op vakkundige literatuur, asook insette van 'n paneel kundiges, aan te neem. Gevolglik het 'n grootskaalse opname as die primêre databron gedien en data voortgebring wat aangewend kon word om die verwantskappe, wat ondersoek word, te modelleer. Moderatorontledings en gedeeltelik-kleinste kwadraat-strukturele vergelykingmodellering is ingespan om die modererende rol van familieinvloed te bepaal. Die korrelasies tussen die dimensies van familieinvloed en konflik, sowel as innovasie, is ook geëvalueer. Die studie se betekenisvolle bevindinge dui daarop dat familieverbintenis 'n beduidende moderator van die verhouding tussen taak-konflik en innovasie is. Bykomende sleutelbevindinge dui daarop dat verhoudingskonflik en harmonie, as nie-ekonomiese familiedoelwitte, albei moderators van die verhouding tussen taakkonflik en innovasie is. Praktiese implikasies van hierdie bevindinge met betrekking tot die bestuur van konflik in familiesakeondernemings is bespreek in terme van die bevordering van 'n familiesakeondernemingomgewing wat vir innovasie bevorderlik is. Verhoudingskonflik is as 'n dimensie van familieinvloed voorgehou. Die studie lewer 'n bydrae tot rentmeesterskapteorie deur nuwe perspektiewe te bied oor die rolle van familieverbintenis, familieharmonie – as nie-ekonomiese doelwit – en verhoudingskonflik oor besluitomvattendheid, deelnemende bestuur en langtermynoriëntasie. Voorts bied die studie 'n nuwe perspektief op die behoud van sosio-emosionele rykdom deur sosio-emosionele welvaartprioriteite – familielede wat met die sakeonderneming identifiseer, die behoud van bindende sosiale bande tussen familielede, emosionele gehegtheid van familielede en dinastiese opvolging – in verband te bring met konflik en innovasie.
