Abstract
According to the magazine "Engineering News" (7 Sept. 1984, 31 Jan. 1986, 17 July 1989) the use of robots in South Africa is increasing all the time. The rate of increase changed from 9 between 1984 and 1986 to 35 between 1987 and 1989. The cost of robots is a factor keeping companies from implementing robots into their production lines. (Steder, Dibner (1988)). The need for cheap multi-purpose robots in South Africa will most definitely grow in the near future according to these trends. Furthermore, the cost of production will have to be decreased to be competitive on the international market. Robots lowers production costs through time saving, extra quality, decreased reworking and smaller economical batch sizes according to Holmqvist and Ostman (1988).
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die tydskrif "Engineering News" ( 7 Sept.
