Abstract
Motherhood is a complex and unique experience. The practice of motherhood can be further complicated when the mother is young, unmarried, poor and with limited formal education. This article reports on an exploratory study that was undertaken with six teenage mothers from a low socio-economic township in the Western Cape on their needs for support. We argued that the perspectives of teenage mothers on the support structures that they need are necessary for any meaningful support programmes to be implemented in such communities. Their narratives sketch a life that is typified by a continuous fight by the teenage mother to navigate her community effectively, and to survive.
