Embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A73 'Commonwealth' with Machine Gun Company 7, Reinforcement 5 on 19 September 1916. He was gassed in 1917 and transferred to the 12th Machine Gun Company, 4th MG BN in 1918. Struck behind the ear with a piece of shell.,
