The Neptuna, a motor vessel at S952 tons filled with high explosives, was beside the wharf awaiting unloading when it was hit by a bomb during the first air raid 19.2.1942. Many were killed instantly and some time later it exploded with a tremendous roar and debris was thrown all over the town. The ship then keeled over and its remains were to be seen alongside the wharf for many years until the Japanese returned to Darwin and salvaged all the ships remaining in harbour waters.,
