Arte e poder

Abstract

Este ensaio é construído em diálogos da sociologia com a história, e com referências que vão do século XVI a imagens da última Documenta de Kassel, um vértice para a arte contemporânea. Aborda, em particular, o poder simbólico - essencial - do artistas como autores, as suas condições, contextos e metamorfoses. Inscreve-o em várias linhas do(s) poder(es) nos espaços artísticos e interroga-se tanto sobre a sua soberania como sobre fragilidades na situação contemporânea. Frente, pois, a várias heterodeterminações e heterolegitimações da arte que hoje subordinam este tipo de reflexão ao papel das suas tutelas, mediações, mercados, mediatização e recepção entre outros usos instrumentais da arte e da cultura, o ensaio procura (re)situar o poder dos artistas no que parece um espaço colonizado por outros poderes.

This essay is constructed as a series of dialogues between sociology and history, with references that stretch from the 16th century to images from the last Documenta in Kassel, one of the pinnacles of contemporary art. It addresses, in particular, the symbolic – essential – power of artists as authors, and its conditions, contexts and metamorphoses. It sets that power within various aspects of the power(s) in artistic spaces, and questions the artistic power, its sovereignty and fragilities, in the contemporary situation. In the light of the various forms of hetero-determination and hetero-legimation of art that today subordinate this kind of reflection to the role of its patronage, intermediation, markets, media coverage and reception, among other instrumental uses of art and culture, the essay then attempts to (re)position the power of artists in what seems to be a space that has been colonised by other powers.
