De étnicos a “étnicos”: uma abordagem aos “angolares” de São Tomé e Príncipe

Abstract

Angolares e forros têm o estatuto de grupos étnicos e rácicos, expressões quase equivalentes no contexto estudado, usadas pelos santomenses para se classificarem entre si. Forros e angolares sentem-se genética e ontologicamente diferentes: os forros consideram-se superiores pela junção com um sangue valorizador, o do europeu, que idealmente ter-se-ia misturado apenas com os seus ascendentes. Os angolares teriam sangue e comportamento “mais africano” e inferior, como resultado da sua pureza intacta, sinónimo de primitividade. O sangue misturado dos forros é a metáfora que valida e legitima uma cultura grupal que se considera mais propensa à civilidade e portanto à ocupação de lugares de maior poder socio-político e económico.

Angolares and forros have the status of racial and ethnic groups, expressions that have almost the same meaning in the studied context, usually used by santomense people to identify one another. Forros and angolares feel genetically and ontologically distinct: the forros consider themselves superior due to the union with a greatly valued blood, the european one, that ideally had only mixed with forros ancestors. The angolares would have a “more african” blood and behaviour, being that way less civilized as a result of that supposed absence: they’re the purest, the untouchable, the real primitives. The mixed blood of the forros is the metaphor that gives legitimacy to a cultural group which consider themselves more civilized and so more prone to having valid access to socio-political and economic positions of power.
