World geography textbook. The Yŏjae ch'waryo (輿載撮要) is the geography textbook published by O Hoeng-muk (吳 [Hoeng] 黙) in 1887. There are a number of different editions, such as a one-volume edition, a two-volume edition, a five-volume edition, an eight-volume edition, and a ten-volume edition. The one-volume edition is the earliest and was printed from wood-block. This book is the revised ten-volume edition which O Hoeng-muk published in 1894 when he was the magistrate of Kosŏng, Kyŏngsang Province. King Kojong (高宗) established modern educational institutions with the goals of national prosperity and human resource development, and emphasized the importance of practical studies, placing special emphasis on geography. He judged that it was urgent to understand world geography and international affairs as well as those of Korea. Yŏjae ch'waryo was the first geography textbook in Korea in the modern sense in that it includes a map of the world and that of Korea. The part that explains world geography was compiled based on the Statesman's Year-book published in England in 1886. The chapters on Korean geography were a compilation of local chronicles.
      In Korean (Hanmun).
