Biographical / Historical note:William Donaldson (active approximately 1796-1802) was a British sailor for the East India Company. On the Lord Hawkesbury, he was first officer in 1796-1798, and became captain in 1798 or 1799-1802.
The Lord Hawkesbury was a British East India Company ship, built by Randall & Brent. The ship was launched in 1787 and broken up in 1808.

Summary:Autograph manuscript log book, kept by first officer William Donaldson aboard the East India Company ship Lord Hawkesbury, from 28 March 1796 to 4 September 1798. The log documents the ship's voyage and return, under the command of John Price, from Deptford, England to Bengal, India. Recorded stops include Portsmouth and Gravesend, England; the Motherbank, off the Isle of Wight; Saint Helena Island; Table Bay, South Africa; Pinang Island, Malaysia; and locations in Bengal, India including Madras Roads (Chennai), Khejuri, Saugar Roads (Gānga Sāgar), and Diamond Harbour. Included are daily positions and weather observations; notes on interactions with other ships; transfers of sailors to and from other ships; and lists of passengers that were transported by the Lord Hawkesbury on the journey, including regiments of British soldiers, and civilian men, women, and children. Also included is a list of the Dutch ships captured by Vice Admiral George Elphinstone at Saldanha Bay, South Africa, in August 1796.
