Summary:Manuscript copies, in the hand of John Bacon, Jr., of 21 personal letters by John Newton to Newton's close friend John Bacon. The letters primarily contain routine social correspondence, such as descriptions of travel through England and updates on the health of mutual acquaintances, as well as spiritual musings, especially on Newton's own unworthiness. The letters also contain several references to Newton's friend, William Cowper, and Cowper's friend, Mary Unwin. Dos-a-dos, the volume contains two unsigned English hymns titled Hymn for Sabbath morning and Ascension. At the beginning of the manuscript is a short introduction by Bacon, Jr., providing a brief biography of Newton and mentioning his uncertainty about how his father became acquainted with Newton.
