Summary:The papers document Thomas Adam's career as a country lawyer from his early training in London in 1755 through 1817. The papers include diaries with daily entries documenting his life in London; letters from his mother Elizabeth and his brother Alexander (also a lawyer); letters, notes, and manuscripts written by his office manager James Russell and his manager at Eshott John Temple with a wealth of details about the Eshott property and Alnwick affairs; detailed financial records (1795-1817) resulting from Adams' income as an attorney and rents from properties, and sale of goods from his many estates. The financial records also include details about the settlement of the estate of his brother Benjamin.
The papers also include ca. 130 notes and letters from his client Thomas Carr who later became an intimate friend of Adams. The letters include discussions of business matters relating to the Eshott estate as well as the management of the coal mine and at least one farm. The letters document his affairs and his eventual ruin resulting in the sale of his Eshott estate to Adams. The letters trace the friendship between the two men, and include intimate letters that Carr asked be destroyed because if the details were known "... it is a totall separation between man and Wife me and mine."
