Scope and Contents
The papers contain audiocassettes, videocassettes, photographs, correspondence, and printed material related to David Leeming's biography of James Baldwin, James Baldwin: A Biography. The audiocassettes contain interviews with various family, friends, and colleagues of James Baldwin and his close friend and mentor, Beauford Delaney. The videocassettes contain television programs and an anthology of films on Baldwin. The photographs depict portraits of Baldwin and snapshots of Baldwin alone and with friends in his Saint-Paul-de-Vence residence and at other locations. Other Papers includes correspondence regarding Leeming's research and permissions for his biography on Baldwin, James Baldwin's autograph signature, and two published books by Leeming.

David Leeming, born February 26, 1937 in Peekskill, New York. Leeming is professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at the University of Connecticut. He wrote James Baldwin: A Biography and Amazing Grace: A Life of Beauford Delaney .

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
