5 photograph albums compiled by Harry Hideo Matsukane and 1 photograph album compiled by Bernice Kazuko Nagai Matsukane of their lives in California, circa 1928-1939. Depicted are relatives, classmates, and other acquaintances (many of whom are identified). Photographs compiled by Harry Matsukane were primarily taken in Santa Ana, California, and are chiefly of athletic events, parades, and family automobiles. An album from 1936-1937 documents his travels in Japan to Nakatsugawa, Yawatahama, Uwajima, Beppu, Matsuyama, Kyoto, Yokohama, and other locations, as well as Honolulu, Hawaii. Both Harry Matsukane and Bernice Matsukane appear in multiple photographs.
Photographs compiled by Bernice Matsukane were taken in Niles Canyon, Long Beach, Yosemite National Park, and Santa Ana.

Biographical / Historical
Harry Hideo Matsukane (1915-2013) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Akihiro Matsukane and Kiku Izumi. He graduated from the Santa Ana Junior College in California in 1935 and married Bernice Kazuko Nagai Matsukane (1916-2009) after 1940. Bernice Matsukane graduated from Washington Union High School in 1934 and worked as a cosmetologist. The Matsukanes were incarcerated at the Topaz War Relocation Center Site (also known as the Central Utah Relocation Center) from 1942 to 1943. They returned to Orange, California, after their incarceration.
Processing Information
Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.

Opening Hours
Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours.
