LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. "THE HOME SECRETARY" AT CAR- DIFF THEATRE ROYAL. 'Tolitioal priuoiples should 1>8 like chain armour—strong, but fiexible-a. protection, tut not an impediment." This is one of the many caustic., cynioal remarks that abound in Mr. R. O. Carton's latest play, "The Homes Secre- tary," produced at the Theatre Roy a.' on. Mon- day evening. The dialogue is sometimes brilliant, and often contains an epigram that rtniinds one of an author who is now without the pale of society. But of dramatic situation there is surprisingly little in the play. "Dun- can Trendel," "the Home Secretary," is an advanced democrat, who, fortunately or un- fortunately, is married to a woman whose political principles are strongly compounded of honesty :indl Socialism. This unique com- bination ultimately drives their marriage through three stages—"doubt, recrimination, estrangement." The husband and wife go their different ways; eventually th.°y realise their tolly, and re-wnite. That is the plot, disen- cumbered of its political verbiage. To the man of the world and to the politi ral partisan "The Home Secretary" affords a very pleasant evening's amusement, but. regarded as a; drama pure and simpls, Mr. Carton has not repeated the success of his "'Liberty Hall." Miss Hall Caine's "Rhoda Trendel" outrivals her recent famous portrayal of "Dulcie Larondie." She invests tha character with a wealth of womanly chanm, of subdued pathos, and artistic charac- terisation. Mr. Harry Stanford is botlf manly and impressive in the part of "Dunoan Trendel," and three fine character studies are oontribuisd by Messrs. Charles Goodhari. T. I. w --1)unacomhe. and Claude Agaew. Mrs. Henry Kitts, an old Cardiff favourite, renders a -fine portrayal oi "Lady Clotilda." The mounting and dressing are particularly worthy of notice. Misr, Hall Caine's dresses especially are "two lovely for words." THE GRAND THEATRE. Haidie and Yon Leer's "The Plunger" was T staged at the Grand Theatre on Mondav evening, and the popular old drama- was proch oed by a well-selected company of artistes. The plot is well known, and its enthralling and sensational, character was appre- ciated by a large audience. A feature of the pieoe which was productive of a deal of applause was the introduction into the third act of a variety entertainment, which includes character songs and dances, tableaux vivanLs, aid cornet and posthorn solos. THE EMPIRES. CAFDIFF. Ai: wca only to be expected, the Cardiff Empire was well filled on Monday niglit, and right -royal receptions were accorded) Miss May Evans, who this week makes a most welcome first vistit to Cardiff, fresh from her tavtaRpssful engagement for 26 weeks at the Palace Theatre, London. Miss Evans jOt a finished and most aiccomplished artiste, and lict songs., pathetic or gay, were all rendered to perfection. Her most successful nit sn the role of "The Shop Girl." Miss Evans's sfiftond song also brought down the house. It wao descriptive of the Jrif" of the "slavey. Mr. Stoll's enterprise in engaging Miss May Evans fs sure to bo rewarded bv bumper houses throughout the week. Among tha artistes also appearing are Volti and iRay, a couple, of vorv smart, triple-bar comedians J. H. Hurst, who as a character comedian is one of the l^si"; the Stella Quartette of Vocalists and Danoers, foi:r very clever girls, the Horne Brothers Troupe, la very merry sketch, and Ada. Trousdale, serio-comic vocalist; J apa. and Japo, wire per- formers; and Gaertner and Richards, musical eccentrio clowan. NEWPORT. The billa at the Newport Empire are getting stronger and stronger. This week there is a great bedget of talent. Spry and Austin, that rusticating couple who hare so often made the house roar with laughter ap.d applause with their tricks, are again in the programme, and met with a big reception on Monday night. Miss Daisy Wood, sister of Marie Lloyd, is in fact, as she is aptly described in mural literature, one of the bright lightc of the variety stage. The fasci- nating Sisters Lena, n^ain relatives of Marie Lloyd (one a sister, and another a cousin), further exemplify the assumption that talent runs in families. They are very fetching dancers a.nd duettists. The other turns include Pro- fessor Vox, a very clever ventriloquist; H. F. Wilson. tenor vocalist; Rosie Coleman, come- dienne dancer Miss Daisy James, serio-comic and Denno, master of magic art. THF. PANOPTIOFJPT, CARDIFF. The boards at iihe Panopticon, Cardiff. U-it vacant by the departure of She Kentucky Min&trols, are occupied ishis week by Htrr s famous Prussian Clioir, who bring with ihem a number of first-chvse artistes, a ivoiet varied ^portoi.re» and MI excellent rcp'J- tsrir-ri. The la-st-nam^d was quite upheld at both performances given on Monday, and the a.\ dienefs, which 511ed Mr. Stoll's popular St. Mary-street house, were treaied to p, pro- gramme with which little fault could be found. The ladies .:0 the choir, who povery sw**t vcires, were leaHUy applauded for their ren- derings of some well-selected songs and ballads, and Herr Pareezer himself was most jntereating in his description of scenei and views which wm shown upon tbc screen. Turns were also given by » troupe of speciality artistes, who contribute recitations, musical sketches, and niagioal illusions. ROYAL CLARENCE THEATRE, PONTY- PRIDD. Mr. Harry Brune's company opened oero on Monday night in tbo farcical, musical drama A (K)night in Armour." Thn talented authors, Mr. Harry Bruce and Mr. Walter Burnot, state that the piece was written only to amuse and giake yon laugh." That they have succeeded in their endeavour was demonstrated by the hearty laughter and applause of a numerous audience throughout the evening. An excellent caft is engaged for the production, including Mr. Harry Bruce, Mr. James Chippendale, Mr. Wilford Cheetham, Mr. Arthur Verne, and Mr. W. H. Liddy, Misa Louise Millward, Miss Norah Caronne, Miss Nellie Wallace, and Miss Lallah Davis. The candle chorus and dance by the Eden Quartette was much appreciated. Ths music by Mr. Peter Wilson and the gorgeous scenery by Mr. Nicholas Hinchy are both excel- lent, and well worthy of mention.

NEW RAILWAY TO LONDON.
NEW RAILWAY TO LONDON. IMPORTANT STATEMENT BY SIR J. J. JENKINS. It will be remembered that Sir John Jones Jenkins made one of a party of Swansea gentle- men who visited Barry Docks one day last week. Sir John, in speaking to a "Cambria Daily Leader" reporter of the visit, said: — "I was at Barry with the trustees and the local railway officials last week, and we saw the pier they are constructing for facilitating the Channel passenger traffic, which, as you know, has increased enormously of late. In this connection the Barry directors have hit upon an idea. which is novel, and the carrying out of which will, I believe, be remunerative. They intend to issue circular tickets enabling passeaigers from the Rhondda and Cardiff to land at any port in the Channel, and to return, if they choose, by a different route. They have chosen the Mumbles as one of their places of landing, a fact that will materially increase the usefulness of our pier. and, of course, improve the prospect of its being a paying concern. "Talking of Barry, Sir John, do you know if thc-re is anything new to be said of the proposal to make a new trunk line from London to Swa.r.sea?'' "I don't know that anything 'new' can be said, but I am aware of this that the proposal is being very seriously entertained in the eastern end of the county. Its promotion 5s Ibeing conducted by men of position, some of whom are amongst the most astute and ener- getic capitalists in Glamorganshire." "And you really think there is a prospect of the scheme being carried through?" "I saw on my visit to Barry ma.uy indi- cations of earnestness, many signs of deter- mination, and there iÎs no doubt whatever— not the slightest doubt—that application will shortly be made to Parliament for powers. The application for powers will probably cost a large sum, and a liberal proportion of that money is already in hand." "If I am not trenching too much on your affairs, Sir John, would you mind saying if you or any other Swansea capitalists are euterested in the scheme?"' "Well, up till quite recently my attitudejias been that of a r.vmpathetio looker-on. Now, however, some other Swansea gentlemen and mveelf have beeu asked to jasn in the move- ment, and I shall probably consent. I shall do so because I believe it would be greatly to the advantage of Swansea—and nob only of Swansea, but of the chief South Wales towns— to have another connection with London." "That will mean another big fight with the Great Western Railway 5" "That doesn't trouble me much. Fights with them are nothing nfw to me. Wo have had so many that I have become almort inured to them, and I really think they bave grown to regard me as their natural enemy." "How would you foreshadow the effect of fiiif-h :t line, Sir John?'' "Well, the first effect would, undoubtedly, be that which we have already seen since the opening of the Rhondda and Swansea Bay— the reduction of rates, and consequent benefit to th 1 traders. Since our line opened, the G*ea$ Western fares from Briton Ferry and Port Talbot to Swansea have been reduced, and manufacturers have had greatly improved height terms." "Has the rcute for the proposed new line been settled?" "Not yet- There are two routes suggested- and the promoters will select the bettor of these." "You think that the matter is one that should call for the cordial co-operation of all Swansea ptcple?" "I most certainly do. The advantages of a competing line are obvious. You just in- stitute a comparison between the fares charged by the Great Western from London to the North end from London to Swansea, and you will see what the public have to gain by this scheme." "Do you ccnsider the line would nay?" Ue' ic'cdiv. In the first pUce the ccst of obtaining an Act of b rliament is very much Jess now than formerly, and by the use of modern machinery and latest appliances rail- ways can be constructed cheaper than v.l.rn the Great Western made their line. That being so. we should not reo uire to earn as mu^h as t'wy in order to pay dividend. I think it WOt.1d pay handsomely." What do you think would b¿ the attitude of Parliament to the project ?'' From mv experience of Parliament, I have very little doubt that when we can show them the injustices which South Wales towns suffer, and the undeniable advantages which would accrue from this new undertaking, they would willingly grant powers." WELSH LADIES' CHOIR-
WELSH LADIES' CHOIR- FORTY-ONE PIECES SUNG AT ONE CONCERT. If the Royal Welsh Ladies' Choir continue all through their tour through America as t-fcey began in New York, they will make a record for hard work. They were re-called so often in one concert that they sang 41 different pieces in chorus, duets, and solos. This is rhe "New York Rpeoorcber" account of it:- From the mountains of old Wales, from Cardiff, Builth, Pontypool, Llandudno, Pont- lottyn, and Rhymney there came suoh glorious harmonies last night that Chickiering-hall rang with applause till close upon the hour of m;d- night. It was the first concert of too Rovol Welsh Ladies' Choir, uuder the auspices of St. David's Society. The choir sang and sang, and whether it was an old Welsh tune or some olrrsic song from opera or concerto, or "Annie Laurie," rendered with exquisite harmony, or "Home, Sweet Home," the song sung round the world and adopted by all nations, the lis- teners couid not get e.nough, and encored again and again. It is not necessary b introduce this splendid organisation. Are not the annals of the Columbian Fair bright with its musical accomplishments and the prizes it won? Tlie prize song, '"The Spanish Gipsy," was sung last, night, and the prize singer. Miss Bessie Evans, was heard, but she was only one of many worthy of generous mention, for nearly ^ialf of the choir are eisteddfodio prize-winners, and all were in good voice and) perfect training. Madame Clara Novcllo Davies conducted with her usual spirit, and solos sung by the Misses. Kathleen Evans, Annie Jenkine, Nellie Grif- fiths, Dot Prosser, Neilie Asher. Bessie Evans, Gertrude Drinkwater, Beatrice Edwards, Annie Davies, and Edith Edwards. The concert closed with "God Save the Queen." in Welsh, and th«n it was that the audience showed what it oovld do with Taffy's tongue-
PRAISE FOR CARDIFF.
PRAISE FOR CARDIFF. A CASE OF SUC ESSFUL TRADE SPECIALISATION. The current number of the "Liverpool Jourral of Commerce" oontains an interesting article on "Cardiff," together with a, plan of the port. "The name. and fame of Cardiff as a coal exporting centre," says our contem- porary, "have spread all over the civilised world, and if ever there was a ease of success- ful trade specialisation it exists in this go-ahead and energetic town, which has at length aotually achieved the distinction of being about, if rot the first, port in the world for the volume of its coal exports*. It is to Cardiff, then, that we must go if we wish to learn all tfiat is to be known about the loading of coal, and so very important an item hsus this branch of our export trade become, and. in consequence, so keen is the competition, that 't is absolutely necessary for every port which possesses faci- lities for coal loading and discharging to keep right up to cV.t.-j with the tliousand-and-one time and labour saving appliances which ve now been brought into the business. To Car- diff, then, our representative journeyed, and the result of his visit was to fully confirm the most favourable anticipations. Oeular demonstration wa-s soon given of the "marvellous order, quietness, and rapidity"with which the coal is transferrpd' from the pit'e mouth to the "hurrying" stea-mer. "In the great Bute system the work of coal loading has been reduced to a scknoe, both in the way of expedition and of freedom from breakage. The machinery and appliances nt. the Bute Docks pint every other port almost completely in the sl*a<fe." After a, brief description of the extent of the docks, the writer continues:—"All of these t-hiegs ieU well in favour of the South Wales port as s poaling centre, but Cardiff is ambitious. She wishes x» hove an import trade in gains* w»y commensurate with her export traffic, and not remaining as ait present, in something like the proportion of one to ten." A visit to Cardiff would be anything but complete (the writer goes on) without calling at the Dowlais Iron- works, which he speaks of in highly appre- ciative terms. Proceeding fee Rays that amongst the sights of Cardiff w-re the magni- ficent flour mills of Messrs. SpillerR and Bakers (Limited) and the Cardiff Milling Com- pany (Limited), whose mills were amongst the finsek establishments of the kind in the king- dom. The handsome buildings of the latter were mos* advanftageously placed, the large deep-water frontage ^ight on the dock gi,}g this establishment "both importing i-nd ex- porting facilities which are certainly not im- proved upon by any in the country." "We left- Cardiff," concludes the writsr, "impressed with the same idea that we entered it. a feel- ing of wonder that such an enormous coal ex- port trade can be coped with so quietly and so admirably, and so free from hftch or trouble of any kind. In large businesses a great deal, of oourse, depends on system, but just- as much is due to the personal influence and power of those :It the head of affairs, and no one can go to Cardiff without feeling thst tins latter factor is mainly responsible for the remarkably successful administration of the port."

DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIFF.
DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIFF. ACTIVITY OF THE BUTE AUTHORITIES. We are enabled to state that important pro- posals having in view the development of the trade of Cardiff, both seawards and landwards, will be made on the part of the Bute authorities in the forthcoming session of Parliament. These proposals will embrace railway communi- cations calculated to assist materially to increase the shipments it the docks, while one of the features of the scheme, of far greater importance, will be a project for the utilisation of the West Mud in order to increase the dock accommodation, and for the extension of the low water pier, M M M make it available to three-quarter tide, and giving the greatest possible facilities both for passenger boats and general shipping trade a.nd the greatest possible time for vessels entering and leaving the docks. Of course, at present these schemes are necessarily in an unfinished state, and it is possible they may be modified or extended as the time for deposit- ing Bills arrives. We are enabled to state upon authority that the above information gives a. general outline of the proposals of the Bute. In connection with this matter Lord Bute spent a busy day at Cardiff Castle on Monday. Sir: William Thomae Lewis and a number of other' officials connected with the estate arrived afe; Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, and they closeted with Lord Bute throughout Monday, and we understand the special business under consideration appertained to the measures which are about to be brought forward. It may be mentioned in this connection that two expert, engineers were present and assisted in thsi: deliberations. -??_
