NEATH. THE BltlTONFEltRy IRON COMPANY have discharged lea persons from their employ lately. FIRE.-Between four and five o'clock on Friday morning 0 a cry of fire was heard, and it was discovered that the house occupied bv Thomas Evans, shoemaker, in Wind-street, was in one mass of flame. Mr. Evans had gone to bed the pre- vious night, and left as he thought everything perfectly safe. About four o'clock he was aroused by a smell of burning tllel on proceeding to his shop, he discovered it to be on fire, Rill had only 'ime to escape with his wife, an infant, and a tel'nmt, in their night-clothes only, not having been able to 'Jiatch up any other article of clothing and in this situa- tion they had great difficulty in reaching the street. The Unfortunate man had F,100 worth of leather, £70 worth of ihocs, his clothes, and all his furniture consumed; he had 1so about f,60 in gold, £ 53 of which he had since met with 14, siftiiig the ashes. The whole of the house was destroyed, Hud the fire was prevented from extending by the active exertions of Mr. Hopkins, engineer, with the Neath engine, ^taeh was in a very effective state Evan Evans, Esq., of the High-street brewery's engine, which plied in the rear of the premises under the able management of its worthy pro- prietor and the Neath Abbey engine, together with the police and the inhabitants, who used their utmost exertions. There was also a plentiful supply of water, and the morning 0 being calm, all circumstances combined to stop the progress of the devouring element, and confined it to the original house, otherwise the consequences must have been dreadful, *8 it is in the centre of the town, a id connected with a groett many other houses. A subscription is now making of lothes and money for the unfortunate sufferers. Evans, who IS a sober, striving man, has by this lamentable circumstance Kven reduced from comparative prosperity to poverty. His case occasions great sympathy.

HEALTH Of TOWNS. AT a PUBLIC MEETING, held at-theTown-hall, Cardiff, on Friday, the 20th October, it was resolved :— That a committee, consisting of the following gentlemen, :^»oly,—The Mayor, the Rsv. T. Stacey, Dr. Moore, C. C. Wil- is^. Esq., Bi. Grover, Esq., B. Matthews, Esq., and C. Yachell, be appointed to go through and compare the Public Health With-the Cardiff Paving Act, and report on the merits o. each °n adjourned meeting to be held on the 3rd of November." v At the adjourned meeting, held in pursuance of the above reso- .^woa, on the 3rd of November instant, the report was read; and a. *as proposed by C. Vachell, Esq., and seconded by C. C. Wil- Esq. #- 'That the report produced to this meeting be printed, and the ^8 adduced as for the report be printed with it." THE REPORT. jThe committee appointed to investigate and compare the Public .lealth Act and the Cardiff' Paving Act have agreed to the foliow- aS report That by a comparison of the two Acts, it appears, that there is Power contained in the Cardiff' Act which it would be highly de- 1 to retain; and that there are, on the other.hand, many L*.ers and provisions of the Public Health Act, which it would be greatest advantage to possess. But inasmuch as the Street | .paissioners contemplate carrying out the drainage under their **r<3ent powers, it might be considered expedient to defer, for the £ csent, applying for the extension of the Public Health Act to town." THE FACTS ADDUCED. >JJy a comparison of the two Acts it appears, that there is a power .stained in the Cardiff Act, which it would be highly desirable to kin, namely:— it The power to compel owners of houses to pitch and pave the toets, in front of their premises, at their own cost. And that there are, on the other hand, many powers and provi- of the Public Health Act, which it would be of the greatest Outage to possess, namely:— The power of regulating common lodging-houses in the town. i*?*10 power of compelling owners of houses to make private drains } the public sewers. r The power to regulate the width and levels of all new streets, The power to regulate the levels of the lowest floors and cellars ^11 new buildings. H The lower of dividing the rates, under that Act, into two kinds, ju^elv, the special and general district rates, according as the pur- for which tiny such rate is levied be either of special benefit to district only, or beneficial to the town at large. l^iv power to levy a private improvement rate, for works done to 6 Premises only and the advantage of repaying suck expenses ft.period of 30 years by means of that rate (this power of re- Z^nt in 30 years extends also to the special district rate). W' power for owners of tenements under £ 10 a year to com- for street rates, at a reduced estimate, not less than two- nor more than four-fifths. ifythe very important power for the protection of the rate- Act {"s> requiring, that before any rate under the Public Health made, an estimate of the amount shall be prepared, and be to public inspection. Pn. the motion of E. P. Richards, Esq., seconded by T. Evans, <T'lt was resolved uat the thanks of this meeting be given to the gentlemen W^the committee, for the trouble they have taken in the in- Ration." R. LEWIS REECE, Chairman.
