Recently, the instability of the power grid has been increased with the increase in the proportion of fluctuating renewable energy sources. In order to improve the grid stability, technologies to compensate the fluctuations of renewable energy through energy storage systems have been widely studied. Hydrogen energy storage system called regenerative hydrogen fuel cell (RHFC) system is attracting attention because of its ability to store large capacity of energy. Previously, hydrogen was stored by high pressure compression. However, this compressed hydrogen gas (CHG) method has limitations of safety issues and low hydrogen storage density. Liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) stores hydrogen in the form of liquid organic compounds, allowing safe hydrogen storage at atmospheric pressure, and a high hydrogen storage density. In this study, a comprehensive study was conducted to apply LOHC as a hydrogen storage technology for RHFC systems. First, a net energy analysis was conducted to consider the energy required for system manufacturing and operation. Basic characteristics evaluations were performed on the LOHC material of dibenzyltoluene (DBT), and $Pt/CeO_{2}$ catalysts were developed using glycine nitrate process (GNP), which was capable of synthesizing highly dispersed nano-catalysts to improve dehydrogenation rates. Then, a $20$ $Nm^{3}/h$ LOHC system design was proposed to verify the feasibility of LOHC technology at the system level, and the system was successfully developed and evaluated based on the design. Finally, an energy analysis was carried out on each element technology, and future research and development directions for LOHC technology were suggested. This study will make it possible to store hydrogen more safely with high hydrogen storage density, and the results is applicable to various energy systems utilizing hydrogen in the future.
