The diffuse transport of some solutes across the liquid-liquid interface

The diffusive transport of some solutes across the liquid liquid interface has been studied with the aid of the analytical ultracentrifuge. Both a small molecule, water, and a large molecule, ribonuclease have been quantitatively investigated. The object of these studies was to measure the rate of transport of these solutes across the liquid-liquid interface in terms of a permeability constant. Extreme cases of high and low permeabilities were investigated using proteins in various organic systems and in a mixture of ethyl cellosolve-ammonium sulfate-water. An intermediate permeability was determined in the case of water transferring across the nitrobenzene-water interface.
