Dignidad Rebelde: the (re)writing of a modern day Chicana and Chicano codex

In this paper I examine the work of Dignidad Rebelde, a Chicana/o graphic art collaboration from Oakland, California. I situate them as part of what Shifram Goldman (1984) identifies as the Chicana/o Poster Art Movement. I use a Chicana Feminist lens to inform the ways their work reflects and affects the Chicana/o community and movement, in the context of the current and historical Chicana/o movement. As such, this paper explores the extent of Dignidad Rebelde's impact, and place in the Chicana/o Political Poster Art Movement. I examine posters which center 'terrorists' as well as the 'margins of the margins', the social context of these posters, and the journeys these posters take from production to consumption. As such, I argue that Dignidad Rebelde are both Codex Makers and Nepantleras as their work writes, (re)writes and creates history. The study sheds light on the impact of political art in social movements.
