How do memory enhancement strategies impact students' learning of high-frequency words?

This study examines two methods of instruction: 1) a traditional method using flashcard drills, worksheets, and movement (zoo-phonics), and 2) a method that incorporates the use of memory enhancement strategies. The study examines these two methods in order to answer the question: How do memory enhancement strategies impact the students' learning of high-frequency words? At the onset of this study it was believed that memory enhancement strategies were one way to make learning easier and more enjoyable for students. After conducting this study it became evident that students could successfully learn to read and spell the words through both methods of instruction. While the study actually suggested that students learned to spell words better through the use of memory enhancement strategies, there was no difference in the retention of these words at the end of the six-week study. However, the results do suggest that memory enhancement strategies have a positive impact on student learning. While no long-term difference in retention was found when comparing the two methods of instruction, the impact on students' learning is both positive and significant.
