Real-time voltage stability assessment through wide-area loss index

Electrical power systems when operated under loaded conditions cause disruption of power system equilibrium and issues related to voltage stability. Often times the electrical power systems are thus exploited leading to the problems with voltage stability and even voltage collapse. It has become a growing concern for the utilities to maintain voltage stability in the power system. The wide area nature of power systems and the fact that increased loadings in some areas of the system can impact other areas has resulted in increased attention to new generation of system protection tools. In this project, the power system has been simulated in real-time using a discrete real-time simulator, Opal-RT. Condition of the power system associated with voltage stability is assessed in real-time using synchronized wide area power flow measurements. Protecting the system against voltage collapse is the main goal of this project.
