| Description: | The metal (possibly zinc alloy) statue is of "L'amour a l'arc" ("love with a bow", i.e Eros or Cupid). Information on the sculpture is limited, but a plaque on the base says it was done "Par Aurilli (Beaux Arts 1902)". There is also the name "R Aurili" (with one L) and the word "France" cast into the base of the statue. The artist seems to be Richard (or Ricardo) Aurili, an Italian sculptor born in 1834, who may very well have been a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, although we cannot confirm this. He did apparently exhibit at the Salon des Artistes in Paris in 1893, 1894, and 1896. The statue was given to James Keough in 1903. The statue, which shows a winged Eros drawing a bow (there was originally an arrow which is now missing) is approximately 31.5 inches tall, including the marble base. It is not known how many copies were made of the statue, but there is a record of one selling at Sotheby's in England in 1998 for $5,734 USD. Major Keough was one of the nation's, and indeed the world's most outstanding marksmen in his day. He died in Wakefield on January 31, 1946 at the age of 82. He was the holder of several world records for marksmanship, and served in the Richardson Light Guard, the Spanish-American War, and was one of the founders of the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club. After his death the library received two display cases of Keough's trophies and awards. With the exception of the Eros statue, all of those other awards are now in the possession of the Wakefield Historical Society.
