El texto de De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii es muy complicado. En algunas ocasiones parece imposible dar con la interpretación correcta. Éste es el caso de una afirmación realmente sorprendente acerca del número tres: Marciano afirma que es “el primer número”. Aun cuando se aceptara que el número uno no era un número auténtico desde la perspectiva de los autores antiguos, se hace difícil aceptar que el primer número sea el tres y no el dos. El autor analiza las interpretaciones de otros estudiosos y propone una nueva explicación basada en la división tradicional de los números.
The text De Nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii is very complex. Sometimes, it seems impossible to find the right interpretation. This is the case of a surprising affirmation about the number three: Marciano declares that “this is the first number”. Even when number one was not considered an authentic number from the ancient authors’ perspective, it is difficult to accept that the first number is three, and not two. The author investigates the interpretations of other studies, and he suggests a new explanation based on the traditional division of numbers.
