The imperfect tense of Romance languages has been a puzzle for linguistic theory because of the variety of the contexts of use, and the diversity and apparent contradictoriness of its occurrences. Moreover, the imperfect tense occupies a central role in linguistic theory, since it has been one of the main sources of the distinction between perfective and imperfective aspect. We address these issues in this chapter, attempting an analysis that in many respects differs from others in the literature.

Abstract

The imperfect tense of Romance languages has been a puzzle for linguistic theory because of the variety of the contexts of use, and the diversity and apparent contradictoriness of its occurrences. Moreover, the imperfect tense occupies a central role in linguistic theory, since it has been one of the main sources of the distinction between perfective and imperfective aspect. We address these issues in this chapter, attempting an analysis that in many respects differs from others in the literature.
