Léo Belmonte, a fictional character featured in Marguerite Yourcenar's novel "Un homme obscur", is strikingly reminiscent of Spinoza. This paper provides a thoroughgoing investigation of the Spinozistic elements that can be detected in Belmonte and in this novel in general. It also considers an earlier (and mostly overlooked) version of the novel, the shorter story "D'après Rembrandt", published in 1934.
