Abstract: The goal of the present thesis was to synthesize hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2.4H2O) and to incorporate it in an alkyd paint in order to understand its influence in the paint’s gloss. Hydromagnesite is a mineral which may be found in nature but may be also produced synthetically. This mineral is being used to replace titanium dioxide in paint manufacturing, and presents excellent flame retardant properties. This thesis is focused in the synthesis of hydromagnesite via the carbonation reaction of magnesium hydroxide, at low temperature and pressure. Slurries of magnesium hydroxide in water were prepared at desired temperatures and stirring rate, followed by the addition of CO2 when the desired temperature was achieved, starting the carbonation reaction. After the reaction, the resulting product was filtrated and dried in a microwave/oven and characterized. During the reaction, the pH, temperature and conductivity values were measured, and the solids content was assessed before and after the reaction. To optimize the production of hydromagnesite, parameters such as the initial solids content, drying procedure, CO2 flow rate, reaction time and initial temperature of the slurry were varied. Four initial trial reactions were performed to test the feasibility of the carbonation reaction. Initially, two reactions with 7 wt% of magnesium hydroxide with different agitation were performed. Both slurries where prepared at 20˚C. The product from the second reaction was subjected to a XRD analysis, which showed that only 10 wt% of hydromagnesite was produced. Then, a reduction in the particles size of the magnesium hydroxide was performed and XRD has shown a yield of 59 wt% of hydromagnesite. The last reaction of this trial was performed with a slurry at 60˚C and a higher CO2 flow rate, which was introduced at 64˚C. A higher particle size and specific surface area were obtained. The Loss On Ignition test confirmed that a higher yield of hydromagnesite was achieved, 62.2 wt%.Subsequently, four reactions with different initial solids content (4 to 7 wt%) were carried out. The reaction with 5 wt% of magnesium hydroxide achieved a higher yield of hydromagnesite (75.2 wt%), while the lowest percentage was obtained with 7 wt% of magnesium hydroxide (69.6 wt%). The particle size analysis showed that the highest value of the mean diameter was obtained with an initial solids content of 4 wt%, while the lowest one was achieved with 7 wt% of magnesium hydroxide. Using 5 wt% of magnesium hydroxide, the specific surface area featured the maximum value, while, once again, the lowest value was obtained with 7 wt%. SEM analysis revealed that the produced hydromagnesite exhibited a clearly defined rose-flower structure. The unusual increase in the surface area with the size of the particles may be explained by this complex morphology of hydromagnesite particles, with a more open structure with increasing size. The reduction of CO2 flow rate resulted in a lower percentage of hydromagnesite, even after more reaction time. On the other hand, the tests revealed that bigger particles and higher specific surface areas were obtained when the product was dried in the microwave. Higher percentages of hydromagnesite were also obtained with this drying method. In summary, in order to optimize the production of hydromagnesite, a slurry with 4-5 wt% of magnesium hydroxide should be prepared at 60˚C and CO2 should be added at 64˚C. The resultant product should be dried in a microwave. The rose-flower structure of hydromagnesite leads to a decrease in the gloss of the paint when this mineral is incorporated in its formulation as a filler. When testing the synthesized hydromagnesite in an alkyd paint for metal/wood surfaces, the glossy paint features a matte aspect. However, further work to reduce agglomerates in the paint formulation will be required for optimum performance.
