A Porta Urbana no Urbano-Rural Português: O Caso de Oliveira do Bairro

Abstract

An urban door is, by definition, an architectural object or an urban element marking the entrance or exit of a limited space. This theme is an exercise of subtlety, since it has several and quite rich meanings. A door has the function of opening and closing spaces, but any place has the function of an arrival point and a departure point, and the urban door ̶ as part of a city ̶ is the place where a journey begins as could be the place where it ends. In the olden days, or in the closed city, it had the function of defense and of demonstrating power and wealth. However, since the twenties of the last century, the breakdown of the dichotomy between the peripheral diffuse and the consolidated centers and, consequently, the boundaries of a city, changed it into a network of linking roads, that transformed it in an infrastructure of movement and traffic accessibility. The time in which we live in is conducive to change, by increasing environmental awareness and the way we live. Thus, it is urgent to transform cities into places that include natural spaces, eliminate barriers between the rural and the urban, approaching them and creating dynamic links between urban centralities and the extensive city. This must begin in those places where we feel we are crossing the urban gates. The design of a moment of transition and entry into the city of Oliveira do Bairro intends to highlight it as a dynamic city. So, we pointed out, on one hand, its healthy nature, in which Nature itself is a central point to be recognized, valued and maintained, and, on the other hand, its inclusive brand, since it allows the sharing of all mobilities and dynamics, either intellectual or generational. The project to be presented in this document is divided into three different components: a city-wide urban intervention, rehabilitation of the structuring axis of Oliveira do Bairro ̶ National Road 235 ̶ and the proposal for an urban plaza at the North entrance with the development of a Youth Hostel. This intervention has two main objectives: it aims to convert the transitional infrastructure into a public space, giving it a new identity to a deprecated place, and to make Oliveira do Bairro a more urban and less incaracteristic place, where the new centralities should punctuate a timeless and unavoiddable rurality.

Uma porta urbana é, por definição, um objeto arquitetónico ou um elemento urbano de marcação de entrada ou saída de um espaço limitado. Este tema é um exercício de subtileza, uma vez que tem diversos significados e bastante ricos. Uma porta tem a função de abrir e fechar espaços, mas qualquer lugar tem a função de ponto de chegada e de ponto de partida, e a porta urbana ̶ como parte de uma cidade ̶ é o local onde se inicia uma viagem ou, pelo contrário, onde ela termina. Na Antiguidade, ou na cidade fechada, ela tinha a função de defesa e de ostentação de poder e riqueza. A partir dos anos 20 do século passado, a quebra da dicotomia entre o difuso periférico e os centros consolidados e, consequentemente, dos limites da cidade, transformou-a numa rede de conexão de vias, tornando-se numa infraestrutura de circulação e acessibilidade de tráfego. A época em que vivemos é propícia a mudanças, pela crescente consciência ambiental e pela maneira como vivemos. Assim, é urgente transformar as cidades em locais que incluam espaços naturais, eliminar as barreiras entre o rural e o urbano, aproximando-os, e criar ligações dinâmicas entre as centralidades urbanas e a cidade extensiva. Isto deve começar nos lugares em que sentimos que estamos a cruzar as portas urbanas. O desenho de um momento de transição e entrada na cidade de Oliveira do Bairro pretende evidenciá-la como cidade dinâmica. Por isso, sublinhamos por um lado, o seu carácter saudável, em que a Natureza é um ponto central a ser reconhecido, valorizado e mantido, e, por outro lado, vincamos a sua marca inclusiva, uma vez que permite a partilha de todas as mobilidades e dinâmicas, intelectuais e geracionais. O projeto que se vai apresentar neste documento divide-se em três componentes diferentes: uma intervenção urbana à escala da cidade, a reabilitação do eixo estruturante de Oliveira do Bairro ̶ a Estrada Nacional 235 ̶ e a proposta para uma praça urbana na entrada Norte na cidade, com o desenvolvimento de uma Pousada da Juventude. Esta intervenção tem dois grandes objetivos: converter a infraestrutura de transição em espaço público, dando uma nova identidade a um local descaracterizado, e tornar Oliveira do Bairro num local mais urbano e menos incaracterístico, onde as novas centralidades devem pontuar uma ruralidade intemporal e incontornável.
