Harmonização da grafia toponímica do município de Benguela

Abstract

A Onomástica é a disciplina que estuda os nomes próprios de pessoas (Antroponímia) e de lugares (Toponímia). O presente trabalho centrou-se, na análise dos nomes geográficos, isto é, nomes de sítios, povoações, aldeias, avenidas, ruas, travessas, praças, montes e rios, incluindo as motivações das respectivas denominações. Este estudo visa contribuir para o processo de harmonização da grafia toponímica do município de Benguela e apresentar alguns aspectos da história sociocultural – constituição do espaço, processo de povoamento e cultura local na identificação, orientação e localização, bem como o conhecimento dos nomes fixados em placas toponímicas e as informações sobre as razões dessas designações. Por este motivo, o respeito e valorização dos nomes de lugares mostra-se essencial para a compreensão dos topónimos, não só como elemento de orientação e identificação, como também permitirá conhecer e divulgar os nomes de lugares não conhecidos, de modo a saber respeitá-los e grafá-los em documentos oficiais. Este procedimento possibilitará resgatar os valores culturais que se julgam perdidos na nossa sociedade e construir uma memória e identidade de uma sociedade angolana, particularmente de Benguela.

Onomastic is the discipline that examines the name of people (anthroponomy) and the name of places (toponymy). This work has its focus on the geographical names analysis, which means the names of places, villages, avenues, streets, alleys, squares, mountains and rivers, and on the reasons of their origin. The present study aims to be a valued contribution to a standardization regarding the spelling of toponyms in the Benguela municipality. Not only to contribute to the sociocultural History of the place itself - constitution of urban and rural space, settlement procedures and local culture, to a better orientation and location, but also to encourage the awareness of the names inscribed on name signs (in streets, avenues, villages, etc.) and the right information about the reasons of each designation. For those reasons, the respect and value of names of places is essential to understand toponyms, not only as an orientation and identification, but also as knowledge and exposure of unknown names, so that it would become possible to use them and spell them the right way in official documents. This procedure will allow rescuing cultural values that one thought they would be lost and consequently build a memory and an identity of an Angolan society, in particular in the city of Benguela.
