Abstract

Abstract

An Educational Interpretation of Thomas Aquinas' Ontology

The purpose of this dissertation is to present an interpretation of Thomas Aquinas' ontology as an educational theory. As put forward in Summa contra Gentiles and Summa Theologiae, Aquinas' ontology is generally known to represent a dichotomic system, i.e., natural theology and revealed theology. Apparently natural theology and revealed theology deal with being and God respectively, as philosophy and theology, but the core of his ontology consists of the theory of personality. The theory concretely presents the ontological structure of human nature and the process of self-perfection, which leads to a more complete theory of the personality.
It is evident that Aquinas' metaphysics, what is here called metaphysics of being is quite different from metaphysics of essence of his days. The metaphysics of being deals with the basic question of the relation between existence and essence in a being. This question is not identical with that dealt by metaphysics of essence, which emphasizes a contrast between existence and essence as two aspects of a being, designating each of them as reality and appearance.
Aquinas' answer to the problem of being is that existence and essence cannot come into existence until they are combined to constitute a being. It may seem that Aquinas follows nominalism against realism in the controversy over the universal in the medieval times. But Aquinas introduces a special type of being, the Creator, in which the relation between existence and essence is different from a more common type of being, creatures. In God essence coincides with existence, which is not the case with creatures. In this way, the being of God amounts to the same as "essence" or "reality" set up by realism, making Aquinas one of the great synthesizers of nominalism and realism.
Aquinas made it his prime task of philosophy to explain how man can reach or turn to the sacred realm from this secular world. In his view, essence of the Creator that is completely fulfilled in His existence is the same as essence of man that is incompletely realized in his being. According to Aquinas, essence which man shares with God defines his personality. And he rejects any theory of a pre-established personality. He asserts that man's personality is a being established by man's knowing the divine truth, and his whole salvation depends upon the knowledge of this truth. Knowledge of the divine truth can be acquired through the inquiry of all the things of which the existence is imparted by God. Therefore it may be said that from the Aquinas' point of view the purpose of the study cannot be separated from the purpose of living.
