Abstract
This paper investigates how Russians identify the grammatical gender of -ь nouns. For this, I perform an experiment with Russian native speakers as well as advanced level Korean L2 learners based on the markedness theory, in which the grammatical gender selection patterns of Russian native speakers and L2 learners are examined. I also analyze error patterns reflected in the Russian National Corpus, paying attention to the distribution and frequency of occurrence of masculine and feminine nouns factored by morphological forms. This study reveals that the identification of the Russian grammatical gender of -ь nouns is sensitive to morphology despite the lack of such gender-specifying endings as -a. In particular, I show the tendency where the unmarked gender of -ь nouns is feminine and that masculine -ь nouns, the marked category, either signal their gender by specific morphological forms (-tel, -ar), individually lexicalize into (and are individually learned) isolate masculine nouns (gost, put, den), or are absorbed into the unmarked feminine -ь noun category (stepen, gortan), depending on each lexical groups size and frequency of occurrence. For Russian native speakers, -ь nouns are acquired as unmarked feminine and marked masculine. In contrast, L2 learners acquire -ь masculine and feminine nouns as separate lists on a one-by-one basis, and thus show gender agreement errors with -ь nouns even at the advanced level. In light of this result, this paper proposes a more effective way of teaching -ь nouns to Korean L2 learner on the basis of -ь nouns markedness features.
