Abstract
This paper is about an ablation of tungsten in high temperature flow. Ablation experiment and numerical calculation was carried out for this study at the same time. Tungsten has the highest melting point and its hardness and strength properties are outstanding when temperature is high. Therefore tungsten have been used widely in high temperature environment, however it is weak against the ablation by oxidation.
Ablation phenomena of tungsten are related to the oxidation behavior at the surface. In low temperature range where tungsten oxides exist in solid or liquid phase, almost ablation phenomena occurs by pressure difference which sweeps the tungsten oxides at liquid or solid phase. On the other hand, in high temperature range where most tungsten oxides exist in gas phase, tungsten oxides scarcely evaporate when tungsten oxides are formed by oxidation. Therefore in this high temperature range, the oxidation rate decides the ablation rate.
In this study, we assumed probability function which is related to the oxidation speed, and theoretically made an ablation model of tungsten applied in high temperature range. And we performed numerical analysis about ablation behavior of tungsten along time with 2-D axisymmetric cylinder shape. Also, we set stagnation pressure and plasma exposure time as variables and performed ablation experiment with pure tungsten specimen in high temperature plasma equipment. Through a comparison between experimental results and numerical analysis, we figured out the probability function around 3,000K, in stagnation pressure range of 0.8~1.3 atm.
