Abstract

This thesis reads Mary Shelleys Frankenstein as a dramatization of Adam Smiths Theory of Moral Sentiments. Although there exist no records to confirm that Shelley was aware of TMS, the text of Frankenstein demonstrates her thorough understanding not only of the philosophers moral theory but also of his narrative theory introduced in Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. Most critics who read Frankenstein next to TMS regard the novel as a parable about the failure of sympathy, reasoning that the outward form of the creature inhibits the imaginative transport that Smith encourages. This thesis proposes to revaluate the fundamentals of Smiths sympathy in conjunction with his narrative theory and to read Frankenstein anew by arguing that the imaginative transport does not consist in penetrating the inner feelings of others but in conceiving the situation that affect them, It shows that Smith does not confine spectatordom to the realms of a theatrical or mental representation of sentiments of others but expands spectatordom to the whole network of social and cultural practices that affect those sentiments. It ultimately argues that Smith in LRBL maps out the network in the sphere of narrative literature through which readers could conceive the situation that conditions the sentiments of others and come to judge whether the cause is proportioned to the emotion represented. In light of this reading of Smiths theory, I examine the ways in which the creature is depicted as a Smithian spectator in contrast to Victor, and how the frame narrative of the novel faithfully reflects Smiths narrative theory. Last but not least, taking a cue from Margaret who plays the role of the recipient of Waltons letters and manuscript but nevertheless technically occupies a place outside the narrative structure, I suggest that the ultimate Smithian spectator Shelley has in mind is us, the readers of Frankenstein.

본 논문은 메리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인: 새로운 프로메테우스』를 아담 스미스의 『도덕감정론』을 극화하는 작품으로 읽는다. 셸리가 『도덕감정론』을 읽었다는 기록은 없지만 소설의 텍스트는 그녀가 스미스의 도덕 철학뿐 아니라 『수사학과 순수 문학 강의록』에서 소개되는 내러티브 이론까지 숙지하고 있었음을 반증한다. 작품 분석에 『도덕감정론』을 접목한 대부분의 비평은 크리처의 겉모습이 스미스가 독려하는 상상의 자리바꿈을 저해한다는 이유로 이 소설을 공감의 실패에 대한 우화로 읽어 왔다. 본 논문은 스미스의 상상의 자리바꿈이 우리가 목도하는 감정에 대한 상상이 아니라 감정에 영향을 미치는 상황에 대한 상상임을 그의 내러티브 이론과 연계하여 규명하면서 『프랑켄슈타인』을 재조명한다. 이를 위해 1장에서 『도덕감정론』과 『수사학과 순수 문학 강의록』의 논지를 짚어 본다. 스미스의 공감론은 겉으로 드러나는 감정의 경향이나 효과에 근거한 관념화가 피상적인 연상 작용에 그칠 수밖에 없다는 문제의식에서 출발하여 공감이 감정의 원인에 대한 온전한 관망을 통해 가능함을 역설한다. 따라서 스미스의 공감은 단편적인 장면이나 누군가의 설명으로 타인의 감정을 맞닥뜨리게 되는 현실보다 감정 형성에 영향을 미치는 사회, 문화, 환경 같은 상황적 요인들을 펼쳐 보이는 내러티브 문학에서 진가를 발휘할 수 있는 이론이다. 그의 공감론과 내러티브 이론을 연계한 기존 비평은 스미스가 타인의 감정처럼 감각으로 직접 느낄 수 없는 대상에 대한 묘사로 분류하는 간접 서술이 독자의 공감을 유도하기 위한 감상주의적 기법으로 강조된다고 보았다. 한편, 본고는 스미스가 간접 서술의 중요성을 작중 상황과의 관계에서 조명하면서 감정의 효과가 그 원인에 적절한지 독자가 판단하며 공감할 수 있는 내러티브 양식을 구안하고 있음을 규명한다. 2장에서는 크리처가 스미스의 관망자로 어떻게 형상화되는지 분석한다. 크리처는 벽의 작은 틈 사이로 드레이시 가족의 삶을 관망하고 언어를 습득하며 감정의 원인과의 관계에서 감정의 적절성을 판단하는 공감의 주체로 성장한다. 셸리는 크리처를 스미스의 관망자로 그려 낼 뿐 아니라 액자의 병치를 통해 그가 공감하는 드레이시 가족의 법정 이야기를 저스틴을 죽음으로 내모는 프랑켄슈타인 집안의 법정 이야기와 대치시키며 공감의 필요성을 부각시킨다. 3장에서는 셸리가 마가렛을 월튼의 편지와 기록을 읽게 될 수신자이자 액자 밖의 관망자로 설정한 것이 독자를 향한 공감의 초대임을 조명한다. 『프랑켄슈타인』은 크리처의 이야기에 공감하지 않는 빅터의 이야기를 월튼이 마가렛에게 전하는 액자 형식을 통해 공감의 실패를 그리는 듯하다. 한편, 셸리는 액자 형식을 통해 크리처가 살인을 저지르기까지의 이야기와 빅터의 생명 창조 이야기를 병치시킴으로써 전자의 분노가 후자의 야망에 합당한 것인지 독자 스스로 생각해 볼 수 있는 플롯을 설계한다. 독자는 감정의 원인을 추론하는 과정에서 부제의 새로운 프로메테우스가 생명 창조 이야기를 통해 역사의 영웅으로 기억되길 염원하는 빅터가 아니라 스미스의 관망자로 형상화되는 크리처임을 깨닫게 된다. 셸리는 스미스의 공감론과 그의 내러티브 이론을 융합하여 독자를 관망자로 상정하는 『프랑켄슈타인』을 창조했다. 그녀는 공감을 주제로 하는 액자소설에서 문학 읽기가 수동적인 감정의 수용에 그치기보다 작중 상황과의 관계에서 감정의 적절성을 판단하는 능동적인 행위가 되어야 함을 이야기한다.
