Abstract
Takahashi Tohoru has so far been mainly viewed in Korea as a Japanese scholar who studied only Korean Confucianism. Korean researchers seem to have overlooked the fact that he had been in fact a professor of "Joseon(Korean) Literature" at Kyungsung(keizo) Imperial University in Joseon. That is partly because his studies on Korean Confucianism have attracted too much attention among them. From 1926 when the university was established, he as a professor was in charge of the classes on "Joseon Literature" until 1939 when he was retired. Even after his retirement, he as a emeritus professor had a considerable effect on the class. In this regard, it is most natural that we tries questioning matter-of-factly on how he thought about "Joseon Literature". This study, while following his careers as a "Joseon Literature" professor, raises crucial questions and issues as follows. First of all, I illuminate what it means that he became a first professor lecturing on "Joseon Literature" at a period when "Joseon Literature" as a department was being established. And then I focus on what role he played in the process of the department being developed. Thirdly I also investigate about when he got to build his identity as a scholar on "Joseon Literature", and when and how he incorporated his former studies into the category of "Joseon Literature". While making clear these questions and issues, the range of Joseon Literature" he envisioned will take shape. In this process, I could identify what effects his limitations as a Japanese had on classes on "Joseon Literature" at Kyungsung Imperial University. It is after he had been appointed as a professor at Kyungsung Imperial University that he began to build his scholastic identity studying "Joseon Literature". From this period, he continued to incorporate his former studies including Joseon Buddhism into the range of "Joseon Literature". In sum, it could be argued that he didn"t become a professor as a scholar on "Joseon Literature", but he began being a scholar on "Joseon Literature" from the point when he was appointed as a professor.
