정조의 명덕(明德) 해석과 왕권강화 논리

Abstract

본 논문은 정조(1752~1800, 재위 1776~1800)가 《대학》의 명덕(明德)개념

을 재해석함으로써 군주의 특수성을 정당화하였다는 점을 논증하고, 이러한

정조의 명덕해석이 성리학적 개념과 언어로 구성되어 있지만 성리학적 정치

지향과 어떤 측면에서 달라지는 지를 논증하고자 한 글이다. 정조의 명덕해

석이 성리학과 다른 정치지향을 가진다는 점을 논증하기 위해 먼저 주희의

명덕해석의 특징을 살펴보았다.

주희는 《대학》에서 말하는 통치의 주체를 왕에 한정하지 않고 모든 사람

들이 통치에 참여하는 것이라는 점을 주장하면서 모든 사람들이 통치에 참

여할 수 있는 조건으로 명덕을 제시한다. 반면 정조는 주희가 이상적인 사회

를 구현하기 위한 전제로 제시한 인간의 조건들에 대해서 회의한다. 정조는

인간의 동질성과 차이, 그리고 목적론적 세계관을 설명하기 위해 동원된 리,

기, 심, 성과 같은 기본적인 성리학적 개념들을 받아들여서 사유하기는 하지

만, 그 개념들 사이에 논리적으로 불일치하는 부분들을 일관되게 만들기 위

한 시도를 한다. 본 논문에서는 정조가 중요한 성리학적 개념들의 재해석을

통해 명덕을 재규정하여 어떻게 왕권강화논리로 만드는지를 해명하고자 하

였다. This article examines the difference in understanding of minde (明德; bright

virtue) between King Jungjo (正祖: 1752~1800) and Zhu Xi (朱熹: 1130~1200), and

argue that this interpretative difference results in the discrepancy of their respective

premises of governance. In Neo-Confucian thought, mingde is understood as the

potential for political participation and the ability to pursue the human nature

which was equally given from Heaven. While Zhu Xi was interested in the equality

and potential of human nature and mingde, Jungjo focused more on the individual

difference of human nature and ability. Junjo emphasized especially logical

inconsistency in conventional interpretation on the theoretical relationship among

key concepts to the Neo-Confucian understanding of mingde, such as li (理), qi (氣),

xin (心) and xing (性). In his attempt to establish coherence among those concepts,

King Jungjo tried to the theoretically justify a powerful kingship differentiated from

Zhu Xis political ideal. This article shows how Jungjo redefined the concepts above

mentioned and reversed the traditional interpretations in order to enhance the king

s power.
