미국 종교 흐름의 구조

Abstract

미국은 청교도들이 이민 와서 세운 나라다. 그래서 미국 사람들은 최소의 화폐 단위인 1센트(cent)짜리 동전에조차 '우리는 하나님 속에서 서로를 믿는다.'(In God We Trust)라고 새겨놓았다. 토크빌(Alexis de Tocqueville)은 그의 책 『미국의 민주주의(Democracy in America)』에서 "바닷가에 내렸던 최초의 청교도들에서 미국의 모든 운명을 내다 볼 수 있었다"라고 말했다. 그러니까 대다수의 미국인들이 오늘날 일상생활 속에서 크리스천으로 살아가는 것은 당연한 일인지도 모른다. 특히 1900년 이후 미국의 인구는 3.5배 늘어났으나, 교인 수는 7배 증가하였다. 그리고 1800년에는 기독교 교회가 20개 종파였던 것이 오늘날에는 900여개 종파로 확대되었다. 흔히 미국의 정신적 지도자라면 빌리 그레함(Billy Graham)이나 제리 팔웰(Jerry Falwell)과 같은 목사들을 대개 상기하게 된다. 뿐만 아니다. 세속적 지도자들인 역대 대통령 중에도 철처한 무신론자(atheist)는 단 한명 없었다. 이쯤 되니 대통령들이 성경 책 앞에서 취임선서를한다는 것을 아무도 이상하다고 생각할 수가 없는 것이다. 거의 모든 미국적 리더십은 기독교적 초월성에 의해 단단히 뒷받침되어 왔던 셈이다. United States of America is a country that originated from Puritans' immigration and settlement on a new land, as it is often imagined with the term 'White Anglo-Saxon Protestants' (WASP). In hs book, Democracy in America, did Alexis de Tocqueville foresee America's fate from the first Puritans' landing on the seashores of America. Based on its origins, it might be quite natural that most of Americans should live their lives as christians today. However, there is another strong current in the American religious stream The unified belief system of the early nation cannot be characterized as a simple blind adherence but as a refined pubIic spiritual tradition which has denied biased commitment to fanatical faiths. Religion has been recognized as a matter of individual choice and free religious expressions have been legally supported. In addition, CathoIicism, Judaism, African religions, native American religions, and religions derived from the East have come to coexist with various alternative religions that emerged from secularization trends and even New Age cults, as immigration expanded and religious pluralism prevailed. Nevertheless, it is also important that an overwhelming unifying discourse including both Puritanism and religious pluralism has been socialIy established: such various religions come to be ultimately assimilated into "American religion" like a "religious melting pot." In short, American reIigion has been not only aggressive to other religions but also open to them and has built a dream of an overarching canopy. This could be reevaluated as the unique American spiritual heritage in its true sense.
