Abstract

Thiswork attempts to investigate the politics of race in theUnited States

and the development of Chicano literature that explores the history of Chicanos

from the 1880s until the 1960s. Beyond a few sporadic previous works, it is

possible to classify contemporary Chicano novelists into two groups. The first

group is the pioneers who published their works between 1959 and 1971; Jose

Antonio Villareal, author of Pocho (1959), Richard Vasquez and ErnestoGalarza.

Their works were written in English with traditional technique characteristic of

Anglo-American letters and treated primarily the issue of acculturation ofMexican

family after coming to the United States. The acculturation process is assimilated

to conservative multiculturalism and liberal multiculturalism. The second group

consists of the most outstanding novelists as Tomas Rivera and Miguel Mendez

who written his first works between 1971 and 1976. During this period occurs

the maturation of Chicano novel with some factors that help greatly to this

development: the creation of the first Chicano publisher Quinto Sol in 1969. In

general, these novels are written fromthe perspective of criticalmulticulturalism.
