마테오 릿치의「坤與萬國全圖」연구(1)

Abstract

마테오 릿치는 중국에서의 선교활동 중 세계지도가 동서양의 문화의 벽을 허무는데 놀라운 힘을 지녔음을 발견하였다. 그는 여러 차례 세계지도의 제작을 하게 되고 이의 백미가 북경판 「곤여만국전도」이다. 지도의 규모와 내용을 통해 지리적인 중화관과의 충돌을 피하면서 중국인들을 설득시키고자 하였다. 「곤여만국전도」를 통해 릿치는 동양과 서양이 어떻게 연결되어 있음을 설명함으로써, 세계와 중국 사회와의 커뮤니케이션을 시도한 것이다. 중국인들에게는 상상의 세계였던 직방바깥의 세계가 릿치의 지도를 통해 현실의 세계로 다가온 것이다. 유럽어로 쓰여진 세계지리 지식을 중국 어법으로 번역한 것이 「곤여만국전도」였다. 릿치는 또한 스스로가 이방인이 아님을 말하고자 하였고, 동시에 유럽과 중국 모두 천주의 세계임을 암시하고자 하였던 것이다. 이를 위해 지도의 곳곳에 이와 관련되는 내용을 삽입시키는 것을 잊지 않았다.

Fr. Matteo Ricci, as a Jesuit missionary, are considered as the most outstanding cultural mediator between China and the West of all times. It was not the primary aim of the Ricci to train the Chinese in European science and techonology. Though scientific aims were not of paramount concern to the Jesuits, their cartographic works had the potential to effect revolutionary changes in Chinese map making practices. Ricci' s world map, if accepted as true, called for some alterations in Chinese world views. The conception of the world as round went against a school of cosmographic thought according to which the world was square and had a generally flat surface. Perhaps more difficult to accept was the representation of China as one small country among many in a world. A feature often remarked on Ricci' s world map is the placement of China near the center. Ricci adjusted the image so that 180 0 meridian rather than the 0 meridian passed through the center of the map. Thus China also appear near the center. This idea could make to conform with Chinese conceptions of geographic actuality.
