Abstract

One main struggle related to the theory of the four parts of the mind (心四分說) in Mere Consciousness Buddhism is whether, in addition to the third part (the self-attesting part) of the mind, the fourth part (the re-self-attesting part) of the mind is necessary or not. Zuanzang (玄奘) proved, in The Completion of Mere Consciousness, the existence of the fourth part of the mind by two arguments. The first argument is as follows: The fourth part exists as in the form of what proves the third part, because all parts of the mind must be proved. The second argument is as follows: The fourth part exists as the result of cognition by the third part, because the third part must have the result of cognition. Before these arguments, Zuanzang proved the existence of the third part on the basis that the recollection of something is only possible when something is previously self-attested. My basic premise is as follows: Although contemplation differs from recollection, the former proves the third part just as the latter does. In this case, recollection means that the second part (the present seeing part) sees the past seeing part (the second part), while contemplation means that the fourth part attests to the third part. In other words, recollection indicates the posterior reflection on prior consciousness, while contemplation indicates the present reflection on present consciousness...
