Kreatief diensbaar aan getrouheid : die strewe na kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie by die vertaling van 'n kinderboek
Abstract
Some general translation theories are touched upon, but the
emphasis falls on the translation of children's books. Translations
aimed at young readers place not only specific, but also unique
demands on the translator. He/she must, to an even greater
degree than other translators, be more creative in order to
ensure that the message of the source text is conveyed as
accurately as possible to the. target text reader. Attention is
given to the special requirements and needs of the young
readers (between the ages of 9 and 12). The translation of
specifically figurative language, proper names and humour is
discussed with reference to the translation of Die zoep-zartsenzirts-
hom avontuur op Orkaanpiek by Linda Rode. Throughout
the text the focus falls on the communicative dynamics of the _
translation and the accessibility thereof for the young reader.
The present state of affairs regarding the translation of
children's books into Afrikaans was placed under the spotlight.
It was shown that there has been a definite decline not only in
the translation of books into Afrikaans, but also in the
publication of original Afrikaans books for children.
