Abstract

As informações directas e indirectas sobre as doenças no antigo Egipto surgem-nos através de representações artísticas (estelas, esculturas, baixos-relevos, pinturas), que nos mostram determinadas patologias, de papiros médicos, que congregam inúmeros elementos sobre os exames, os diagnósticos, os prognósticos e as terapêuticas usados, de textos literários, que ocasionalmente fazem alusões a práticas e cuidados de saúde, e de estudos e análises diversos realizados hodiernamente em múmias e esqueletos. A partir delas, é possível estabelecer uma panorâmica sustentada sobre as principais doenças que afligiam os habitantes do Vale do Nilo, sobre o funcionamento da antiga Medicina egípcia, que combinava tratamentos racionais com tratamentos mágicos, e sobre os técnicos de cura envolvidos (sunu, sacerdotes-uab e sau).

There is a direct and indirect information about diseases in ancient Egypt in artistic representations (such as steles, sculptures, bas-reliefs, paintings) that depict certain pathologies, in medical papyri, that congregate innumerable elements on the examinations, the diagnoses, prognoses and therapeutics used, in literary texts that occasionally refer healthcare practices and in various studies and analyses carried out nowadays in mummies and skeletons. From all these sources, it is possible to establish a well-grounded overview of the major diseases afflicting the inhabitants of the Nile Valley, of the functioning of ancient Egyptian medicine, which combined rational treatments with magical treatments, and of the healers involved (swnw, wab-priests and saw).
