This study aims to contribute towards the planning of adequate training that takes into account the needs of teachers of Portuguese in Canada from a more in-depth knowledge of the teaching and learning contexts. In order to do so, we have established the following research goals: i) define the teaching and learning contexts of Portuguese language in Canada within non-formal disciplines, parallel systems, offered either by community schools or with the support of the Catholic School Board; ii) diagnose difficulties, motivations, expectations and necessities of both, students and teachers; iii) reflect on the needs of teacher training in accordance with the results obtained; and iv) contribute to the development of teacher-training that meets the necessities and specific contexts of students and teachers. In order to address the above research questions, we have built a study aimed precisely at concentrating our understanding of such realities by developing a questionnaire designed to reach four large groups: teachers, parents of students that range from ages 4 to 6 years old, students (9 to 12 years old as one group; another from 15 to 18 as another group). From a research point of view, we wanted not only to understand better all the parties involved in this process – their profiles, engagements, motivations and difficulties -, but also to verify if there are commonalities and which lacunas and potential areas require special intervention. Such intervention could be from local representatives of Portuguese institutions that are responsible for Portuguese language teaching abroad. In terms of training, we aimed to identify principles and strategies in the field that could have potential impact in the professional development of teachers as well as teaching and learning of the language in a more productive environment along with the development of intercultural competencies of the students. The results from the study at hand alongside the knowledge that we have been able to obtain from our informal classroom observation, have proved essential to plan training aligned with the needs of these teachers. For example, among the most noticed difficulties observed and highlighted in this study, we emphasize the following: the need for differentiated teaching strategies adapted to heterogeneous groups either by diverse age groups or different levels of linguistic proficiency in the same classroom; training in the area of creation of didactic materials centered on the development of intercultural competencies; the stimulation of a more collaborative and reflexive environment among teachers; the use of new technologies in the classroom and online; the strategies towards enhancing the motivation of high school students to learn Portuguese as a accredited foreign language; the need for more financial support in terms of human resources and on behalf of the Portuguese government in the promotion of teaching and learning Portuguese language and culture and its cultural prominence in Canada.
