This dissertation has as its main purpose to comprehend the relationship between the youth and associativism. Therefore, it was important to substantiate the motives for youth to associate, to understand the diversity in youthís association practices and to clarify how concepts such as citizenship, social capital and associativism link with the youngsters at the youth associations. In this context, this investigation consists in a study that took place in two youth associations (AssociaÁ„o Juvenil de De„o ñ AJD e Juventude Socialista da PÛvoa de Varzim), using the interview as a tool and technique to collect the data. The interview was applied to a group of elements that were part of those associations. The results obtained in this work confirm that individualization regulates the immersion of personal motivation in the young people for the fruition of associative practice. In other words, the various dimensions of the individualization process induce the immersion of different personal motivations for the associative practice. The results gained also revealed that the change of values influences the young oneís option for unconventional ways of political intervention. The youngsters considered that the young generations are more interested in unconventional ways of participation and are moving away from conventional logics. This fact is due to the change of values occurring in our society. Finally, the results revealed that the associative participation provides the interviewed youngsters to be more active in their citizenship practices in the society and, also, the increasing of social capital. This study aims to contribute to an enlarged comprehension of the theme; however, future studies should explore these questions in a more profound way.
