This dissertation aims to study the analysis of the profitability determinants of Portuguese SME and to verify the relationships between financing sources and profitability of Portuguese SME. In the empirical part of this study we use dynamic models of panel. The research sample is composed by 768 Portuguese SME, extracted from the SABI database (Iberian Balance System - Analysis System of Iberian Balance Sheets). The study took place between 1997 to 2005 performing a total of 6144 observations. To analyze the profitability determinants, the explanatory variables such as size, age, asset structure, risk, growth, debt financing, equity financing, sources of equity and sources of debt are used. The literature review of the present study deals with several financial theories underlying the relationship between profitability and its determinants, which are the theories developed by Modigliani and Miller (1958 and 1963), the static trade-off theory developed by Baxter (1967) and Kraus and Litzenberger (1973), the agency theory of Jensen and Meckling (1976), the pecking order theory developed by Myers (1984) and Myers and Majluf (1984), and finally the theory of the life cycle, which in the current study is addressed according to Walker (1989). Regarding the results, we found that 1) the source of financing with importance considerable for Portuguese SME is medium and long term trade credit; 2) the firm age as determinant influences positively the firm profitability; and 3) equity financing is negatively related to profitability, and this result may be explained by the high interests costs charged on Portuguese SME, considering that profitability was calculated on basis of ratio between operational profits and total assets.
