Overview

Dr. Lionel Smith Beale (1828-1906) was a physician and microscopist who taught at King's College from 1854-1869. A prolific writer of works on physiology and chemical pathology, his most influential works were on the clinical use of microscopes. In this letter, he writes to Dr. William Sharpey (1802-1880) who is a physiologist and, at the time, chair of anatomy and physiology at University College, London. Dr. Beale mentions a forthcoming paper and describes his research on the muscle surrounded by the sarcolemma and the fibers that are involved.
