Overview

Collection of letters to William Sharpey from Henry John Carter, a surgeon in the Bombay army doing research on geology and border-line organisms, such as sponges, algae, infusoria to his old "physiology" teacher, the Secretary of the Royal Society. The letters describe Carter's theories and findings, ask for help with editing for publication, and give news of former school-fellows and naturalists.

Biography of Henry John Carter

Henry John Carter was born in Devonshire, England on August 18, 1813. After studying medicine, he eventually received a surgeon's appointment with the East India Company. He was with the Company from 1842-1862. While in India, he became interested in the geology of the area and published several papers on topics in that field as well as biological matters. After his retirement, he returned to England, married in 1864, and died in 1896.
