History of the Unification Church
The Unification Church, formally known as the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, was established in Korea in 1954 by Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Moon considered himself a prophet whose teachings were divinely inspired. The Unification Church believes its mission is to prepare humankind for the Messiah by unifying all forms of Christianity along its doctrinal lines. The "Divine Principle" is the main theological book of... the Unification Church. Church doctrine has been drawn from the "Divine Principle" as well as the Bible.
Organizationally, the church is divided into national and state churches, which are affiliated with the Unification Church International. Affiliates of the Unification Church include the Unification Theological Seminary, the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP), the Unification Thought Institute, and the Freedom Leadership Foundation. All of these organizations possess in-house presses and publish material about Sun Myung Moon, his thought and activities, the church and its doctrines, and political, economic, and social issues.
The Unification Church is also known as the Tong II movement, the Unified Family, and the Moon Organization. In the 1990s the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification was created as the organizational entity of the Unification Church and sponsored lectures and programs centered around moral and family values.
