Custodial History

A: "John Boyd Thacher and others" sale December 1, 1920 (Anderson Galleries, NYC, lot no. 133.) along with the engraved portrait on Ba:1. Bought by Thomas Jefferson Fitzpatrick, botanist, collector, and professor at the University of Lincoln. Fitzpatrick died in 1952. In 1953 a large part of Fitzpatrick's printed and manuscript botanical collections were bought en masse by the University of Kansas; this letter was probably extracted from the mass shortly thereafter, and placed in the "letter-file" in the Department of Special Collections. In January 1972 it was re-classed as MS P188A.

Ba: The other accompanying material was generated in the 20th century. Items 2-3 were probably added by Fitzpatrick; items 4-6 were produced by an unknown researcher at KU between 1953 and 1972.
