“respeito”, a “dignidade” e a “autonomia”.
Código Deontológico: a “humildade”, a “maturidade”, a “autonomia” e a “equidade”.
This study underlines the importance of learning professional values at the Nursing degree course (CLE) in Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP) – Nursing College of Porto. An ethnographic study was developed by means of a multimethods approach in order to identify professional values recognized by ESEP teachers, tutors and CLE students in nursing practice as well as to identify the most appropriate learning model. The research was conducted with the help of the main actors in all this process and diverse data collecting strategies were used: questionnaires, Rokeach value scale, participant observation, interviews, learning diaries analysis and focus group. There emerged six areas for analysis which enabled us to understand the importance of significant experiences, the influence of the tutors’ role and the values involved in professional values learning. We concluded that five values were recognized and classified by students and by teachers as the most important, namely: "responsibility", "competence", "respect", "dignity" and "autonomy". We identified the existence of several models for teaching and learning values, the importance of the tutors’ role and finally we proposed new values to be recommended to the Judicial Council of the Portuguese Nursing Profession Regulator (Ordem dos Enfermeiros) so as to be added to the Code of Ethics: "humility", "maturity", "autonomy" and "equity".
