Resumo
O presente artigo objetiva apresentar três situações entrelaçadas na formação da realidade econômica, política e religiosa
do Ceará: catolicismo, realidade cearense e o episcopado do período. Marcada em sua contextura histórica pelo
ultramontanismo, a arquidiocese de Fortaleza é herdeira do bispado do Ceará, fundado no período imperial, portanto, dentro
do regime de padroado. Também é fortemente marcada por aspectos geográficos, como o fenômeno da seca. A seca não é
um fenômeno simplesmente climático, mas também cultural, político e social, sendo, por vezes, incapaz de ser dissociado do
éthos do cearense. Para compreender o processo histórico de desenvolvimento desta arquidiocese, faz-se necessário
também apresentar os bispos que estiveram à frente da mesma, até o período do episcopado de Dom José de Medeiros de
Delgado.
The present article aims to present three intertwined situations in the formation of the economic, political and religious reality of Ceará: Catholicism, Cearense reality and the episcopate of the period. Marked in its historical context by the ultramontanismo, the archdiocese of Fortaleza is heiress of the bishopric of Ceará, founded in the imperial period, therefore, within the regime of patron. It is also strongly marked by geographical aspects, such as the drought phenomenon. Drought is not simply a climatic phenomenon, but also a cultural, political and social phenomenon, and is sometimes incapable of being dissociated from the ethos of Ceará. In order to understand the historical process of development of this archdiocese, it is also necessary to present the bishops who were at the forefront of it, until the episcopate period of Dom José de Medeiros de Delgado.
