With the increasing globalization of the tourism markets, more and more tourist destinations compete against one another to gain the tourists’ preference. Automatically, competitiveness acquires a more important role. In terms of tourism, Greece is not only faced with increasing competition by mature Mediterranean destinations, including Spain and Italy, but also with relatively new destinations, e.g., Croatia. This situation shows that a competitive Greek product is now becoming an imperative. In order to identify the factors on which competitiveness depends, the model also known as Porter’s/Borner’s diamond model of competitiveness was used, as adapted by Bieger for implementation of the model to tourist destinations. In addition, the three key parameters of sustainable development (society, environment, economy) were taken into account. In the context of a strategic analysis consisting of destination analysis, market analysis, and extrinsic factor analysis, firstly, an evaluation of the current situation of Greek tourism was performed. The comparison of these elements with the level of tourism services provided by Spain, Italy and Turkey, which were evaluated as key competitors, has showed the strengths and weaknesses of Greek tourism. Therefore, during the analysis, the centre of gravity of Greek tourism is the combination of genuine, contrasting data of Greek nature, and the country’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage. These are the strengths of Greek tourism. The main weaknesses are detected in quality issues in terms of general and dedicated infrastructure, in the supply of accommodation which is dominated by small hotels and is largely seasonal, and, finally, in the organizational structure of tourism promotion bodies at national, regional and local levels. Opportunities with regard to the future development of tourism in Greece are mainly identified in the creation of tourist profiles, which, added to the main tourism product of Greece, i.e., “Sea, sun, beaches”, will enrich and expand it. In the context of the conclusions of this thesis, a number of suggestions were made based on the relevance of functions of an integrated tourism policy, which are related to both marketing and organization of Greek tourism. These are mainly addressed to the various stakeholders of tourism at national, regional and local levels. The scientific review in the conclusion of this paper has shown that the model of Porter/Borner must be changed, so as to be applied to competitiveness problems of tourist destinations. Consequently, the demand conditions factor must include both the current demand situation and any factors which will bring about future changes in the demand for tourism services. Thus, the model acquires rather a dynamic than a static dimension.
